The whole island of Korčula is well known for having a long tradition in wine growing and making which can be traced back to the ancient Greeks time. Blessed with the mild Mediterranean climate, the great soil caracteristics and the sheltered locations, the area offers ideal conditions for viticulture.
Smokvica is the home of Pošip, one of the best white wines in the world. This autochthonous Croatian grape was discovered more then 150 years ago in the fileds below the village, on a hill called Pinćaluš. Nowdays, there is a monument to honor this fact which you can visit on one of the bike or hike trails.
The village, along with the neighbouring village Čara, is the main wine-growing area for Pošip. The caracteristis of the sloped and terraced terrain as well as densly planted wine groves results in most of the works in the vineyards being done by hand in a traditional way. Alongside of Pošip, the white wine Rukatac and the red wine Plavac Mali are also grown here in smaller volumes.
