The trail leads from Smokvica to Brna, and then to the bay of Istruga where sandy beach is surrounded by rushes (Juncus spp.), plants of straight and prickly leaves, and sea beet (Beta vulgaris spp. maritime), which is often used as a delicious replacement for spinach. The cove is skirted by a thick Aleppo pine and holm oak forest. Having passed a narrow and short tunnel, we very soon reach macchia made of the Mediterranean scrubs Among these, wild olive (Olea europea var sylvestris), strawberry tree (Arbutus unedo), laurestine (Viburnum tinus), wild blackberry (Rubus ulmifolius) and Etruscan honeysuckle (Lonicera etrusca) should be highlighted. Further on we reach a genuine evergreen forest of holm oak (Quercus ilex). Passing through the forest, we can see how, despite the thick treetops, enough natural light reaches the forest soil and it is therefore covered with many plant species. This walk is a unique experience, as it points to how the forests were once on the coast of the Mediterranean.
