Situated at 130 meters above sea level, Smokvica is located perfectly overlooking the surrounding hills, with a panoramic view of the vineyards and sea. It lies on the widest and most diverse part of the island of Korcula.  The village is one of the five old settlements on the island, where the continuity of human life is constant from prehistory to today. Stone houses, idyllic streets, rich cultural heritage, century-old vineyards and olive groves are the charms of this island place that evoke passed time.

Today’s Smokvica welcomes you to enjoy natural beauty and visit cultural and historical sites.  The idyllic green surroundings invite you to go on cycling and hiking routes which lead through wine fileds. You will be surprised to find a medieval church or a castle along the hike trails. For more information on these trails, please see the biking and hiking section.

The Land of Pošip

Due to the mild Mediterranean climate, the great soil caracteristics and the sheltered location, the area around Smokvica offers ideal conditions for viticulture. The village is the home of Pošip, one of the best white wines in the world. The local variety was discovered more then 150 years ago precisely here, in the fileds of Smokvica, on the hill called Pinćaluš. Nowdays, there is a monument to honor this which you can visit on one of the bike or hike routes in the fileds of Smokvica.
